Barb Outterson

Barbara Outterson, Director of Music at the Wake Forest Academy of Fine Arts, received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy from Roberts Wesleyan College in Rochester, New York. Prior to college, Mrs. Outterson also studied Voice and Music Theory at the David Hochstein School of Music. She has been performing publicly since age six as a church cantor and soloist, as well as in various choral tours, and numerous musical theatre and operatic productions. Mrs. Outterson has been teaching voice privately since the Spring of 1994 and teaching piano privately since her arrival at Wake Forest Academy in the summer of 1999. She remains active in performance as a member of the North Carolina Master Chorale, under the direction of Dr. Alfred E. Sturgis. In addition, Mrs. Outterson acts as Chorus Manager for the 180 member Symphonic Choir. The chorus performs regularly with the North Carolina Symphony.

Barbara's Mission Statement/Teaching Style:
I believe that private music instruction should be a foundation for self-esteem and other life skills. I strive to meet each student's needs at their level of knowledge and to challenge them beyond it. A feeling of achievement is a great motivator and can turn into confidence to pursue other goals in life. Learning is the first goal, but I work very hard to make it fun and to really listen to each person's needs. Music should be used to express what is in the soul and to move others. That is why I am a musician, and my passion for music makes me want to share it with everyone. One is never too young or too old to appreciate how music can change a life.
